A police investigation has been launched in Wollongong after a man’s body was found floating at the Belmore Basin in the early hours this morning.

Wollongong police officer Detective Sergeant Kevin Bale described the male to be in his mid-thirties. The Illawarra Mercury has reported the body was discovered floating just behind Wollongong’s Fisherman’s Co-op by pedestrians at about 6.30am.

The identity of the male is uncertain although police have no reason to believe the death happened under suspicious circumstances.

“At this stage it’s not being treated as suspicious but the matter is still being investigated,” Detective Sergeant Bale said.

“Police are urging for anyone who was passing by the area between 6am and 6.30am this morning that may have seen a male running around the area in a pair of underwear to contact crime stoppers or Wollongong police.”

An eyewitness who is believed to be one of the last to see the man alive said he ran straight past her.

“He was looking scared like [he] was running from something,” the eyewitness said.

The body has been removed and the scene has been cleared by police.

Anyone with any information on the contact can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and Wollongong Police on 4226 7899.
