Australian universities are facing unprecedented dropout rates among domestic students with a quarter of all domestic students who commenced a bachelor’s degree in 2017 dropping out by 2022. Data from the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA) has shown only 62 per cent of domestic students who began their studies in 2017 graduated within six years. Meanwhile international students, who pay full tuition and are ineligible for HECS/HELP loans, exhibit a stronger completion rate, with 79 per cent of student having graduated over six years and 19 per cent dropping out, while 2 per cent are still enrolled. The New South Wales government has announced a $230 million emergency package aimed at addressing domestic violence in the state. The package includes funding for the expansion of the Staying Home Leaving Violence program, reforms to bail laws, and support for domestic violence support workers. A new study has revealed the level media coverage given to women’s sport continues to trail that dedicate to men. The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation has unveiled its Representation of Women in Sports News Coverage 2022-2023 report. The report analysed more than 34,600 individual pieces of media and showed the coverage of women’s sport in Australia is well below that of their male counterparts. The data shows just 15% of all sports stories in Victoria focused on women’s sport compared to the 81% that focused on men’s.
