Australians will return to the polling booths in six weeks, after the Prime Minister called the federal election this morning. Scott Morrison visited Governor-General David Hurley at Government House, Canberra, about 10.30am to complete the formalities needed to go to an election, and by 11.30am he had fronted the media and declared the federal election would be held Saturday, May 21. The race for the NSW Labor Party’s top job has found its competitors. Kogarah MP Chris Minns and Maroubra MP Michael Daley are both slated to become the new state Opposition Leader, after Jodi McKay resigned following the disastrous Upper-Hunter by-election result. Despite insisting she would win a leadership ballot, Ms McKay delivered her emotional resignation last Friday following a party crisis meeting. When UOW Delta Club member Oscar Rodgers put the call out for interested chess players to form a new club, he was shocked by the response. His Facebook post received over 200 comments from people looking to get involved. Recent COVID-19 lockdowns introduced and reintroduced people to the game online, and the timeless classic has seen a resurgence of popularity that has translated into the real world. Just three years after bursting onto the scene, the Wollongong Bulldogs women’s squad is bursting at the seams. The club has seen a large influx of female players ahead of the kick off of the 2021 South Coast AFL season this Saturday. With a squad of around 60 women and just two divisions on the South Coast, up to 20 players could be on the bench each week. Australian businesses have reported improved financial circumstances 12 months after the COVID-19 pandemic first wreaked havoc on local industries. The Business Conditions and Sentiments Survey, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics last week, also showed fewer businesses were reliant on government subsidies. The findings come as the government ends its $90 billion JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme. The survey found 46% of businesses expect it to be easy or very easy to meet financial commitments over the next three months, compared to just 23% of businesses in August 2020.
