With the 2019 Federal Election campaign entering its final days, Liberal candidate for Gilmore Warren Mundine called on NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to help him win-over voters before polling day. “We know in Warren Mundine we have a fellow traveller, an absolute champion,” the Premier said. “We’ve already been discussing how he’ll be out voice in Canberra, making sure we those billions we want from the federal government.” [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL_xpDMDiMQ[/embedyt] Mr Mundine and the Premier were joined by Transport Minister Andrew Constance, inspecting work on the Berry to Bomaderry bypass, due for completion in 2020. Chris Atlee will be looking to overturn 44 years of Labor dominance at the May 18 federal election, as he contests the seat of Cunningham as the Liberal candidate. Cunningham is among the safest Labor seats in the country, currently held by Sharon Bird on a 13.3% margin. However, Mr Atlee points to changing demographics within the region as a catalyst for eroding that dominance. “It’s not as safe for Labor as it once was. There’s more units and apartments sold in the Wollongong CBD than any other city in New South Wales,” he said. Mr Atlee said population movement…
Ever since Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to visit Antarctica in 1911, human exploration of the continent has proliferated at a steady rate. What started as scientific voyages has since evolved into luxury cruises promising to allow tourists to “meet the personal challenge of reaching the earth’s last great wilderness frontier.” The impact of humans on Antarctica is the focus of a collaboration between UOW’s Global Challenges and iAccelerate. The exhibit brings together visual and physical art pieces, as well as research, in the hope of charting human history on the continent. Kiama Power will be looking to defend its premiership flag in the opening round of the AFL South Coast season this weekend. Kiama defeated the Wollongong Lion’s in last season’s grand-final, and Power vice president Dan Bradley is hopeful the club can replicate that success this time around. He said the club had its eyes on finals berth across its three grades. “Probably make prelims, we don’t want to set too high an expectation, obviously coming off winning a flag is always good, you always want to succeed and continue on with that. The ultimate would be to get three…
Live music is firming as a key issue in this weekend’s state election. In the wake of recent deaths at musical festivals, the Coalition Berejiklian government has flagged an increase in regulation for some festivals deemed ‘high risk’. The Liberal policy requires festival organisers to apply for a ‘music festival license’, a measure some say will suffocate such events by making them financial unviable to hold. Festivals, such as Wollongong’s ‘Yours and Owls’, would be high risk. Live music advocates, such as the Keep Sydney Open party, claim such measures are disproportionate to the risk. In the past year, five…
