One in three school children are starting class without having eaten breakfast, according to a new report. The research was conducted by Foodbank, one of Australia’s leading food relief organisations. Out of 532 teachers surveyed, three quarters of them said student who skipped breakfast had concentration problems, and 82 per cent of the teachers said it increased their workload. The Red Cross is fighting the problem by providing free breakfasts to primary school children. Demand for supported accommodation and homeless services for women in our region is outstripping supply, according to local providers. Supported Accommodation and Homelessness Services in the Shoalhaven Illawarra (SHASSI) faced a cash crisis last year after it merged with two other refuges in the wake of the 2012 ‘Going Home, Staying Home’ reforms. SHASSI CEO Kathy Colyer said the orgainsation was under increased pressure to meet demand. Staff and alumni of the University of Wollongong were introduced to a zen lifestyle at today’s Well @ Work Expo. The event was set up by UOW’s Wellbeing society. The hall was filled with stalls filled with health professionals, health food advocates and fitness experts. The National Trust Wollongong Heritage Festival began this week. The festival is a series of exhibitions and activities in local heritage-listed buildings that will showcase the history of the city. As part of the festival, the Illawarra Historical Society has launched an exhibition at the Illawarra Museum that shows Wollongong during World War 1. The exhibition includes authentic items from the period, including medical equipment, military uniforms and medals. It also features the Keiraville Honour Roll for World War 1.
