The new state-of-the-art performing arts centre has been unveiled in Picton, with its opening expected in November.
The Wollondilly Performing Arts Centre features a 350-seat venue that will hold performances and large functions including theatre, dance, music, civic events and exhibitions.
In the meantime, locals have been provided with the opportunity to have a first look and walk-through of the facility and Tahmoor’s Industry Dance Co. owner Siobhan Dennehy said the new venue was incredible.
“We are very thankful to have a space within our shire and home where our students will be able to showcase their skills from next year,” Ms Dennehy said.
Minister for the Arts, John Graham told the media that the new building will centre creativity at the heart of the community.
“This centre will draw world-class productions, and provide a stage for local artists to perform, share their stories and build creative careers,” Mr Graham said.
The Bloc Dance Academy in Bargo is another one of the local dance studios that will benefit greatly from the build, with dance teacher Skye Roberts explaining that this year the company held their performance at the indoor basketball courts at the Wollondilly Leisure Centre.
“When we were performing at the leisure centre, we didn’t have change rooms or even an actual stage so even those simple things are gonna make the biggest difference,” Miss Roberts said.
“With access to a stage, we will be able to incorporate props and other things like we haven’t been able to before.”
The build forms stage one of the Wollondilly Cultural Precinct and has been funded through grants from Create NSW, Western Parkland City Liveability Program, and Western Sydney Infrastructure.
The Federal Government also provided $5.5 million for the development of the project.
The precinct is expected to deliver improved community facilities, increase employment opportunities, and enhance liveability in the area.
The grand opening of the performing arts centre will be celebrated with a launch party on November 16.
