Exchange students have been settling into campus life at the University of Wollongong for a taste of Australian lifestyle in the Illawarra.
Opportunities for international students to form connections and participate in activities have been held over the last month.
Dutch exchange student Vibeke Timmenga spoke of the mental health support systems promoted by UOW.
“It really amazed me how much support you can get if you need it, or want it,” Ms Temmenga said.
This support extends to most university events as a positive way to create friendships that can assist with the transitioning and integration into Australia’s social culture.
“The Surf Camp was such a nice place to bond with everyone,” Ms Timmenga said.
“When everything comes together, you’re very happy to be here.”
UOW’s social programs are provided by student accommodation and UOW Pulse prioritise meaningful activities throughout Wollongong area.
Social forums are catered towards all students settling into the Illawarra this semester, particularly those unfamiliar with the area and culture.
American exchange student Chloe Bryant said that orientation week was a helpful transition to the introductory elements of campus life at UOW.
“Orientation Week was fun,” Ms Bryant said.
“I’m glad I had a bit of time to understand the campus before classes started.”
On-campus accommodation such as I-House also encourage community connections between students of all levels.
“I live in I-House, so we eat dinner together and go out together,” Ms Bryant said.
Exchange students are aiming to create memorable experiences and positive connections whilst immersed in the Australian culture.
“There’s a lot of nice activities and people are very social,” Ms Timmenga said.
“It’s a good impression so far.”
The focal points of student-led community and inclusivity allows for international students to make the most of their time at UOW.
