The UOW Music Club is aiming to ease the loss of the UniBar Open Mic Night by introducing a host of events throughout the semester, according to its president.
The club is hoping to host songwriting workshops and more open mic barbeques throughout the semester following the success of their first club event on Tuesday, which saw a turnout of more than 70 people.
Musician and UOW Music Club president Xavier Do laments the loss of the UniBar Open Mic Night but is hoping to help music students get involved in the local Wollongong music scene through his club.
“The Open Mic was how I met all my friends through previous years,” Do said.
“It was so essential to the music scene, not only to students but the whole music scene.”
The UniBar Open Mic Night provided local musicians an opportunity to use the UniBar stage and sound system free of charge but was shutdown at the end of last year.
Band manager Campbell Ryan had directed his bands to first perform at the Open Mic Night.
“I think it’s left a big hole in the scene where it was such a staple for so many years and now a lot of new artists don’t know where to turn to, to start kicking off their live music careers,” Mr Ryan said.
“It’s weird not being able to go down on a Tuesday and see all these new acts getting up and giving it a crack.”
UOWTV has had a long history of covering music acts at the UniBar and will follow the UOW Music Club’s activities closely.
