University of Wollongong students will have greater flexibility to tailor their studies from 2027, with revamped Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Social Sciences degrees introducing a broader mix of majors and minors.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Education) Professor Helen Partridge said the changes are designed to give students greater control over their learning and better prepare them for a changing workforce.
“We’re introducing a more of a … ‘choose your own adventure’ for want of a better phrase of saying it,” Prof. Partridge said.
“We want students to be very much not just the center of their studies but actually the drivers of their learning.”
Prof. Partridge said the new structure recognises graduates are increasingly drawing on knowledge from multiple disciplines throughout their careers.
“So, the idea is that we give students the chance to decide where do they see their individual career going in the future and so they can choose from a suite of different majors, minors that will take them there,” she said.
She said the renewed focus on creativity, critical thinking, judgement and adaptability would become even more important as artificial intelligence reshapes the workforce.
“These two degrees aren’t just a good to do, they’re essential,” Prof. Partridge said.
