The future of radio in the Illawarra

Radio streaming provides listeners with on-demand access to content and a more personalised experience, but it also allows creators to reach wider audiences, fostering an ecosystem of voices and genres.

Radio Host, Kevin Barron, 37, said streaming provided more accessibility for listeners, particularly when they don’t have access to radio outlets.

“Sometimes we are all people have, especially with the older generation,” Mr Barron said.

Streaming radio is vital for accessibility, allowing listeners to connect with their favourite stations and programs, regardless of location or access to traditional radio devices, Mr Barron said.

“It’s amazing how much accessibility there is to stations like us nowadays,” he said.

Radio broadcaster Guy Starkley explained in an article the future challenges for radio to adapt.

“The consequences of digitalisation represent worthwhile challenges,” Mr Starkley said.

Mr Starkley believes that the radio industry has an expectation of change to keep pace with the digital age.

“It seems to expect new generations to automatically discover the medium with the onset of adolescence,” he said.

As streaming platforms develop, the traditional radio landscape must adapt by incorporating these changes while maintaining its distinctive characteristics.

These qualities are being preserved, enabling both digital and analog listeners to enjoy music and engage in virtual discussions in radio segments.

Mr Barron has also highlighted the importance of phone calls to the station for feedback and to preserve community connection.

“It’s great to have listeners from everywhere and call the station to engage in the conversations we have during talk breaks,” Mr Barron said.

The rise of streaming radio not only showcases the industry’s adaptability but also enhances accessibility and engagement, allowing more listeners to enjoy diverse content from anywhere.
