UOW’s Early Start Discovery Discovery Space has introduced its Story Play Wednesdays initiative to engage children’s ability to read and develop their imagination.

Story Play Wednesday is a public program for families to come into the Early Start Discovery Space and join in a shared reading of a book with an educator and create something in relation to the book such as an art piece.

“What we are really trying to encourage is children and family to engage with books,” Education Partnership Coordinator Sally Robson said.

“Because the joy of reading can be experienced from the earliest of age and it’s really important that children join in shared reading with their adult.

“There’s nothing more important in terms of the development from the child because if you engage with good quality texts from an early age that really helps long term in terms of their literacy development.”

The space explores translating research through practice and those involved claim everything conducted within the centre is backed by current research by early start academics.

“What we’re drawing on from this research is looking at shared reading in building a community of readers… looking at moving around the world and encouraging communities to read together,” Ms Robson said.

Story Play Wednesday takes place from 10am and is open for children ages 0-10 with the location announced on the day.

The UOW Early Start Discovery Space is a not-for-profit research centre which uses the experience of children in activities to further develop research.

The space is designed to allow the children to take control and display their creativity with an environment that stimulates curiosity, supports independence, encourages social interaction and promotes an inclusive community.
