Creativity took centre stage at GongLUG’s annual LEGO fundraiser, with exhibitioners fostering generosity and community values for a special cause this Christmas season.

During the October long weekend, GongLUG (Wollongong Lego User Group) hosted a fundraiser event in which proceeds were split between a cash donation to SAHSSI and toy donations to children in need.

Lego enthusiast Graham Draper, who founded the event, spoke of the importance of the split donations in order to help a larger portion of the community in need.

“I wanted to go directly to SAHSSI and do a cash donation as well,” Mr Draper said.

“Things are a bit tougher this year so not everyone just wants the toys.”

This year, the fundraiser was held at the Fairy Meadow Fraternity Club at no extra cost for GongLUG, which previously hasn’t been possible at the former venue in Dapto.

The club provided a large function space for exhibitioners and LEGO activities, as well as an opportunity for guests to dine at the club’s own restaurant, La Trattoria

“The beauty of this event is that the Club gave us the venue,” Mr Draper said.

“It means more money for a marketing budget which means more people will show up.”

Members of GongLUG showcased their talents through displays of both unique and traditional builds, while attendees were able to purchase sets of their own.

Llongtime featured GongLUG exhibitioner, Wendy Coppola displayed her collection of LEGO florals alongside her two children.

“It caters to all ages and everything just goes to such a great caus,” Mrs Coppola said.

“LEGO makes everyone smile.”

Whilst GongLUG began as a passion project for LEGO enthusiasts, it has developed in conjunction with American organisation Creations for Charity, who contributed $3000 to donate toys on top of the money raised at the event.

“We branched out to this event after the success of our annual April event,” Mr Draper said.

“We want to get LEGO back in the hands of kids during Christmas time.”

The donations from the event are expected to be made around mid-November.
