Unanderra Train Station has recently been renovated to improve accessibility and to ensure a smoother experience for all passengers after failing to meet their needs.

Renovations at Unanderra Train Station have significantly improved accessibility, ensuring that all members of the community, including those with disabilities, can now better access the station. The upgrade was part of the New South Wales Government’s statewide initiative, the Safe Accessible Transport Program, which aims to deliver modern, secure, and integrated transport infrastructure for communities across the state.

Blair Oliver, Acting Senior Manager Community and Place Partner for South East Coast, explained that Unanderra Station was identified as lacking in accessibility, prompting the improvements.

“The station wasn’t quite meeting the requirements of the community,” Mr Oliver said.

“There were good improvements that could be made to bring it up to standard to meet the community’s needs.”

The renovations included the installation of lifts for wheelchair access and upgraded hearing loops to assist those with hearing impairments. Additionally, visual and audio systems were improved, benefiting passengers with visual impairments.

“There’s improved digital displays and hearing loops installed to enhance audibility for announcements,” Oliver said.

The station’s design has not only focused on functionality but also on aesthetics. In collaboration with the local Aboriginal community, the project incorporated design elements reflecting the natural surroundings, including features resembling waterfalls and patterns along the footbridge that reflect the sandstone cliffs near the station.

“It’s not just about building a concrete ramp. Placemaking is an important part of transport, and it seems like it’s paid off,” Mr Oliver said.

While the renovations have been met with positive feedback, Mr Oliver mentioned the project faced some delays due to the complex nature of working within a rail corridor.

“The biggest thing was the length of time it took to build,” he said, noting challenges with rail closures and access to electrical systems during construction.

Despite these obstacles, the renovation has been deemed a success. Although no formal feedback has been received since completion, Oliver sees the absence of complaints as a positive sign.

“No feedback is good feedback,” he said.

“People appreciate it and don’t feel the need to provide feedback.”

With no further renovations planned for the station, Oliver emphasised the importance of maintaining the improvements.

“Unless we had to maintain or fix something, there’s no further investment at this stage.”

The improvements at Unanderra Station have made a tangible difference for the community, ensuring it remains a crucial hub for all commuters, regardless of their mobility needs.
