AFL has made history this week with an announcement celebrating the role of women in football. Eleni Glouftsis will make her debut as the first female field umpire in Sunday’s AFL game between Essendon and West Coast. The 25-year-old PE teacher at St. Bernard’s College in Melbourne first started umpiring in 2008 with the North Eastern Metro Junior Football Association in Adelaide, before stepping up to the South Australian National Football league, umpiring her first senior match in 2013. Celebrating the birthday of the founder of Buddhism, this year marks the 26th year of the Birthday Buddha Festival in Darling Harbour. Organised by the Illawarra’s Nan Tien Temple and its various Sydney branches, the festival aims to connect people from all walks of life who aspire to live by the message of Buddha. The preparation for the festival spanned two months, and included over 1,000 volunteers from all cultures, backgrounds and ages. Australian university students are looking at an 8 per cent fee increase between 2018- 2021 if the proposed Government 2017/18 budget is approved. On top of this, graduating students will be expected to begin their debt repayments when they start to earn $42, 000 a year; that’s $13,874 less than the current threshold.
