A week to celebrate live art in the Illawarra

Live Art Week runs from the fifth to the seventh of May and provides a chance for University of Wollongong (UOW) students to engage with the ideas of art through creation.

Art practitioner Molly Duggan said that Live Art Week encourages a connection with the artistic world.

“For some people who don’t engage in art, it can be an opportunity for them to do some crafty stuff at the uni,” Ms Duggan said.

She believes that the mural she and fellow artist Bella Taylor are creating, brightens up spaces and encourages positivity.

“I think that if you have really bright, beautiful things here, like this mural we’re doing I think it will help people feel a bit more happier, especially where the mural is positioned,” she said

Live Art Week coordinator Pablo Aguilera Campusano said that the mural was specifically placed in high-traffic area.

“The mural will be exposed to a lot of people,” Mr Aguilera noted.

Ms Duggan has been participating in Live Art Week for several years and has been granted an entire wall to paint.

“This is my fourth year doing Live Art Week…I saw it being advertised and I was like, ‘I could do that’… and now in my fourth year finally they’ve given me a massive wall to do which has been really, really exciting.”

    The mural itself

It was Mr Campusano’s goal to engage students, which lends assistance and boosts their profile.

“We work at a big university full of bright people and we always want to utilise students and help them make their mark,” Mr Campusano said.

“Especially with the ‘collab murals’ I wanted, specifically, just the students to get involved in it and have this massive piece of art at the end of the week that all the students…were part of.”

However Ms Duggan voiced some concerns with how many artists are invited by UOW Pulse to participate.

“Unfortunately when they do reach out to artists, they don’t reach out to as many UOW students who are studying art… as they could be doing. I feel like that would make it a lot more impactful for UOW and the creative arts scene we have here.” she said.

UOW Pulse’s Live Art Week will finish on the 7th of May.
