Dangerous winds have left an intersection in Woonona without power, leaving drivers deciding when to enter the high-speed road.

On August 28, during peak hour traffic, the electricity along Memorial Drive failed, leaving drivers to use the ‘give way’ system.

Disability support worker Zac Treglown, 18, was driving a. mini-van to work when he encountered the power outage on Memorial Drive.

“It was quite stressful for myself because I had eight participants in the car when entering the intersection,” Mr Treglown said.

“I was scared that the drivers would risk pushing through and take that risk of driving through with the oncoming traffic potentially hitting either myself or other vehicles.”

The vital intersection, allows drivers to enter the high-speed road with the power outage lasting for nearly four hours.

Mr Treglown was concerned due to the anxiety the blackout created for his passengers.

“I wasn’t worried for just my safety, but for my participants’ safety too.” Mr Treglown said

However, there were no collisions or crashes reported from the incident.

Woonona resident Jack Markey said he was surprised about how fast people adapted to using the give way method.

“I stopped at the traffic lights and went when I felt safe and I believe that’s what most people did on that road,” Mr Markey said.

“Overall it was pretty crazy to see everyone click into that mode of giving way to each other and not rushing through.”

The electricity around Woonona came back before nine o’clock the same evening.
